Can You Help The Homeless?

Donate and get 10% off your next Criterion order

In recent years, Criterion has been approached many times by charities, and other organisations, asking us to help the homeless and rough sleepers. Usually we are asked if we could donate any surplus stock or even sell bags discounted prices. Unfortunately due to the size of the business and nature of down sleeping bags we must say no.

When contacted by the charity Homeless House we gave the such an answer. We also, as always, offered to help if we could by publishing a news story and some social media posts. Normally we never hear for the charity again. However Homeless House were different writing if one person who saw an article could help then it would be “lifeline to someone this winter”

Who Are Homeless House?

Homeless House was set up in 2019 and is a charity based in Manchester. They provide on-street help to people as well as training and support. Their outreach work is provided for by volunteers. Working through volunteers they write on their website “prevents huge overheads, meaning your donations help directly those on the pavements of the U.K.”

They are desperately in need of sleeping bags and tents to help rough sleepers in the area this winter. If you are in position to be able to donate any old sleeping bags or tents then they would love to hear from you (contact: info.homelesshouse@gmail.com.) If you do donate anything then please let Criterion know and we will give you a 10% discount off any items purchased on your next order.

Why Does Our Support Matter?

Homeless house say that donations will directly help individuals and families facing homelessness. Whilst tents and sleeping bags offer physical protection from the elements. They also help give people some dignity and in the case of a tent privacy and help provide some hope to those in need. If you can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Why Not Down Bags For Rough Sleepers?

Down sleeping bags are much more thermally efficient than synthetic sleeping bags. However, they need to be cared for in a way that it would be difficult for a rough sleeper. They need to be kept clean, dry and most down bags use differential fills, meaning that a good sleeping mat with an appropriate R-value is essential.

It is much better for a charity to try to get synthetic sleeping bags. These are better suited to the adverse conditions of sleeping on the street, working when wet and dirty with bulk and weight not being an issue. Also if being purchased more people can be helped as synthetic bags are much cheaper than down bags.
