For smaller businesses, the unexpected passing of an owner can cast a shadow of uncertainty over the future. At Criterion Sleeping Bags, we were deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our founder, Jerzy Basiurski, in May 2023, during our 20-year anniversary. Faced with the difficult decision, his family chose to close Criterion and liquidate the stock. However, the story takes a turn, as I, Gareth Lyons, the former brand manager, with the blessing of Jerzy’s family, have embarked on the journey to revive Criterion. I am committed to upholding the same values, quality, and ethos that have defined the brand since its launch in 2003.
I took on the role of brand manager at Criterion Sleeping Bags in 2016. Prior to this I worked in various positions in outdoor retail, spanning marketing, buying, and customer-facing roles. I love the passion people have for the outdoors and love to hear their stories of adventures, trips, and experiences. As the brand manager I was most proudly of driving the Criterion’s presence in its first-ever trade shows as well as having the brand used in events like the Dakar Rally and by the British Antarctic Survey. I didn’t want the brand to die in the way it was going to after Jerzy’s death, after so much hard work by so many people so we are now at this point. Criterion is back, its trading and at this moment I’ve temporarily streamlined the down sleeping bags on offer products and am concentrating on our popular ultralight and quantum sleeping bags. I aim to reintroduce the full range by the summer of 2024.
